Love is confusing. We love pizza, sunsets, kittens, diamonds, chocolate … and God. There are many more words in the Bible for love than we use in English: agape, phileo, and storge, to name a few. In the Bible, the concept of “love” seems to be a much richer notion than we comprehend with the use of our singular catch-all word.
And yet, we really need to get this right. Look at Jesus’ answer to the Sadducees and the Pharisees who asked,“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40
We see that the only hope we have to be able to love God and others, is FIRST to receive God’s love to us: “This is real love–not that we loved God, but that he loved us.” I John 4:10
